When a military robot prototype nicknamed Number 5 is struck by lightning, it breaks it's programming and becomes self-aware. Believing himself to be alive, Number 5 seeks sanctuary with a kindly young woman (Ally Sheedy) who protects him from his designer (Steve Guttenberg) and the Defense Department goons who want to send him to the scrapheap.
